Through the efforts of the Connect Us committee and sidewalk proposal, St. Johns County has recently completed a Sidewalk Study for CR210, Palm Valley Road and Mickler Road. A number of alternative alignments were evaluated.
Seven categories were assigned points and used to rank the alternative sidewalk alignments. The categories include safety, cost, accessibility, drainage, environmental impact, permitability/constructability and whether the project fits within existing right-of-ways. Based on the ranking matrix of all alternatives studied, the following proposed alignment received the most points and is the recommended alternative:
"1. The 5-foot sidewalk on the western right-of-way along CR210 2. The 5-foot sidewalk on the western right-of-way along Palm Valley Road 3. The 5-foot sidewalk on the western right-of-way along Mickler Road These recommended alignments represent the safest, the most easily permitted, and the most accessible of the alternatives which were studied. In order to connect to the existing sidewalk at the Intracoastal Waterway bridge, there is a proposed pedestrian crossing at the intersection of CR210 and Woodsdale Drive......" |
The proposed sidewalk segments will connect with existing sidewalks and a crosswalk is proposed just west of the south entrance to Sawmill Lakes.
The estimated cost for the project is $1.5 million. The Connect Us committee recommends the funding for the sidewalk project come from the $6.5 million that Nocatee builders paid St. Johns County for transportation improvements east of the Intracoastal Bridge.
With the approval of this study by the County Commissioners, the new sidewalks could be completed within 18 months.
